Trends
 In
Asia, Future of document technologies looks promising according
to a recent report published by the Gartner group. The report
"State of the Document Technologies Industry: 1997-2003"
identifies the CAGR (combined annual growth rate) for Asia is
51 % and by year 2003 the total size of the world wide business
for document technologies will grow to 41.3 Billion US$.
This is a good indication that Asia has wakened up and going for
the efficiency goal, but as an individual country within Asia,
we are far behind the Gartner group results. There are hardly
any imaging and workflow installations in Sri Lanka, and according
to a preliminary survey with 150 institutions the number of installations
were less than 15. And still none of these companies had a corporate
solution and were restricted to a department or workgroup solution.
Trend in the education is changing as well and now many countries
offer complete courses leading to special document technology
qualifications.

In
countries the document management is well accepted, the trends
towards the complementary technologies are emerging. Workflow
is one of the key technologies that grow rapidly but web based
repository management, collaboration, Internet based imaging,
publishing and report distribution systems are also other
fast growing areas.
